Crosswind Beginner Guide: Survive Your First 5 Hours (2026)

Surviving Your First Days in Crosswind

Crosswind drops you into a pirate-infested open world where the sea is as deadly as the creatures on land. Your first 5 hours determine whether you thrive or become shark food. Here's the survival roadmap.

Day 1: The Essentials

  1. Gather wood and stone immediately — Your first axe and pickaxe are crafted from beach resources. Don't venture inland without tools.
  2. Build a small raft before nightfall — The starter island has limited resources. You need to reach the mainland quickly.
  3. Avoid combat until you have a weapon — Skeletons and pirates patrol the shorelines. Crouch (C key) to reduce detection range.
  4. Craft a bedroll — Respawning at your raft is better than respawning at the random starter island.

Ship Combat Basics

  • Wind direction matters: Ships sail faster with the wind. Use the wind indicator (top-right compass) to position for broadside attacks.
  • Repair during combat: Assign one crew member to repairs. A sinking ship loses all cargo.
  • Boarding vs. sinking: Boarding rewards more loot; sinking is faster. Board when you're stronger, sink when outmatched.
