Default Settings Are Holding You Back
CS2 ships with settings that prioritize visual fidelity over competitive performance. Here are the exact settings changes that professionals use to maximize FPS, reduce input lag, and improve visibility.
Video Settings — Max FPS
| Setting | Recommended | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution | 1280x960 (4:3 stretched) | Wider player models, higher FPS |
| Display Mode | Fullscreen | Lowest input lag |
| Refresh Rate | Max (144/240/360Hz) | Smoother tracking |
| Boost Player Contrast | Enabled | Enemies easier to spot |
| Multisampling Anti-Aliasing | 4x MSAA | Clean edges without much FPS cost |
| Shadow Quality | Low | Shadows still render, minimal cost |
| Texture Quality | Medium | Balanced clarity vs performance |
| Shader Detail | Low | No visual benefit, costs FPS |
| Particle Detail | Low | Reduces visual clutter from explosions |
| Ambient Occlusion | Disabled | Costs FPS, darkens corners hiding enemies |
| HDR | Performance | Better visibility in dark areas |
| FidelityFX Super Resolution | Disabled (highest quality) | Use if you need more FPS on low-end GPU |
| NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency | Enabled + Boost | Reduces input lag significantly |
Crosshair Settings — The Most Personal Setting
Your crosshair is preference, but bad crosshairs cost kills. Here are the most common pro configurations:
Simple Static Crosshair (Most Popular)
cl_crosshairstyle 4 // Static (no dynamic spread) cl_crosshairsize 2 // Small size (range 0-10) cl_crosshairgap -2 // Tight gap (negative = closer) cl_crosshairthickness 0.5 // Thin lines cl_crosshair_drawoutline 1 // Outline for visibility cl_crosshaircolor 1 // Green (best contrast on most maps) cl_crosshairdot 0 // No center dot cl_crosshairalpha 255 // Full opacity

Mouse Settings — This Actually Matters
- Windows mouse settings: 6/11 (default), "Enhance pointer precision" OFF
- DPI: 400-800 DPI (most pros use 400)
- In-game sensitivity: 1.5-3.5 at 400 DPI (eDPI range: 600-1400)
- Raw input: ON (m_rawinput 1) — bypasses Windows acceleration
- Mouse acceleration: OFF — always. No pro uses acceleration.
eDPI Calculator
eDPI = DPI × In-game Sensitivity. The pro average is ~880. If your eDPI is above 1400, you're sacrificing precision for speed. Drop it by 0.1 every few games until you adjust.
Audio Settings
- Audio Output: Stereo Headphones (NOT surround sound — CS2's HRTF already simulates 3D audio)
- 3D Audio Processing: ON (this is the Source 2 HRTF)
- Music Volume: 0 (literally never need it in competitive)
- 10-second warning volume: 0.2 — you just need to hear the tick
Viewmodel Settings
viewmodel_fov 68 // Max FOV (less weapon blocking screen) viewmodel_offset_x 2.5 // Right offset viewmodel_offset_y 0 // Forward offset viewmodel_offset_z -1.5 // Vertical offset cl_bob_lower_amt 5 // Minimal weapon bob cl_bobamt_lat 0.1 // Minimal side-to-side bob cl_bobamt_vert 0.1 // Minimal vertical bob
