The CS2 Economy: It's Not Just About Killing
Counter-Strike 2 is won and lost in the buy menu. Understanding which weapons to buy and when separates good players from great ones. This guide covers every weapon worth buying, their optimal situations, and the economy decisions that win rounds.
S-Tier Weapons — The Meta
AK-47 (T Side — $2,700)
- Damage: One-shot headshot at any range (armored or not)
- Spray pattern: Down-right pull after the first 5 bullets, then left for the remaining 25
- Best range: All ranges. The AK-47 has no range limitation with headshots.
- When to buy: Every full-buy round. If you can afford AK + armor + utility, buy it.
- Pro tip: Tap-fire at long range (1-2 bullets), burst at medium (3-5), spray only at close range. The AK's first bullet is perfectly accurate while crouched and stationary.
M4A4 / M4A1-S (CT Side — $3,100 / $2,900)
- M4A4: 30 rounds, higher fire rate, one extra bullet to kill at long range. Better for multi-kill scenarios.
- M4A1-S: 20 rounds, integrated suppressor, tighter spray. Better for holding angles and tapping.
- When to buy either: Every full-buy CT round.
- Choice: M4A1-S for solo anchor positions (easier to control), M4A4 for site anchors expecting rushes (more bullets).
AWP ($4,750)
- Damage: One-shot kill to the body (above the legs), any range
- When to buy: When you have $4,750 + armor and your team agrees. Never double-AWP unless you're winning heavily.
- Movement penalty: You move at 200 units/sec scoped vs 250 units/sec with rifles. Counter-strafe timing is tighter.
- Shoulder peek: Tap A/D quickly to bait enemy AWP shots, then peek while they're cycling.
A-Tier Weapons — Great Value
Galil AR (T Side — $1,800)
The best force-buy T rifle. At $1,800, you can afford Galil + armor + a flashbang on a $3,600 force-buy budget. Higher magazine capacity (35 rounds) than the AK, forgiving spray pattern, passable accuracy.
FAMAS (CT Side — $1,950)
CT force-buy equivalent. The 3-round burst mode is now viable in CS2 due to improved recoil recovery. Use burst at medium-long range, full auto at close range.
Desert Eagle ($700)
The eco round equalizer. Two body shots kill at close range, one headshot at any range. Only buy on eco rounds if you're confident — a $700 miss is a $700 waste. Use for holding tight angles where you can land the first shot.
MP9 (CT) / MAC-10 (T) — SMG Force Buys
- MP9 ($1,250): Best CT anti-eco weapon. Insane fire rate, jump-shot accuracy, $600 kill reward. Run and gun viable at close range.
- MAC-10 ($1,050): T equivalent. Cheaper, slightly worse accuracy, same $600 reward. Great for rushing sites on anti-eco rounds.

Pistol Round → Second Round Guide
- Pistol round win: Buy SMG + helmet. Do NOT buy a rifle — you risk losing it if you die, and the enemy team has pistols.
- Pistol round loss: Force-buy on second round (pistol + armor, or Deagle armor) OR full save. Never half-buy (partial utility, no armor).
When to Eco vs. Force Buy
- Full eco ($0 spent): When your team has <$2,000 each after a loss. Save for a full buy next round.
- Force buy: When you have $3,400-$3,800 after a loss streak (loser bonus is high). Galil/FAMAS + armor + 1 flash.
- Half buy: When some players can full buy and others can't. Buy what you can, prioritize armor and one useful weapon.
The $16,000 Problem (Max Money)
If you hit $16,000 (max money), you MUST spend down. Buy a better weapon, drop a gun for a teammate, or buy full utility. Sitting at max money is literally throwing away potential credits — every round you're at cap, you earn $0.
