Slay the Spire 2 Changes Everything
Slay the Spire 2 builds on the legendary roguelike deckbuilder with five playable characters, a new co-op mode, and completely reworked Ascension system. If you're coming from the original Slay the Spire or diving in fresh, this guide covers everything you need to survive Act 1 and beyond.
The 5 Characters — Who to Play First
| Character | Difficulty | Playstyle | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ironclad | Easy | Strength scaling, self-damage synergy | Beginners learning fundamentals |
| Silent | Medium | Poison stacking, shiv spam, discard synergy | Players who enjoy combo decks |
| Defect | Medium | Orb management, power scaling, frost/lightning | Methodical players who plan ahead |
| Regent (NEW) | Hard | Stance dancing, flow mechanic, adaptable | Intermediate+ players |
| Necrobinder (NEW) | Hard | Minion summoning, sacrifice synergy | Players who enjoy swarm/zoo archetypes |
💡 Recommendation: Start with Ironclad. His straightforward strength-scaling builds teach you the game's fundamentals without complex mechanics. Aim for your first Heart kill with Ironclad before trying the Silent.
The 5 Deadliest Beginner Mistakes
- Taking every card reward: A bloated deck kills runs. Skip cards that don't fit your build. The skip button is your most powerful tool.
- Avoiding Elite fights: Elites drop relics. Relics win runs. Path toward at least 2-3 Elite fights per act.
- Resting too often: Upgrading cards at campfires compounds over a run. Only rest when you're at critical HP (<30%) before a boss.
- Ignoring card removal: Strikes and Defends are bad cards. Remove Strikes first (offense comes from your build, not basic attacks).
- Forcing archetypes: Don't decide "I'm building a strength deck" on floor 1. Take strong individual cards and let the archetype emerge naturally by mid-Act 2.
Essential Combat Tips
- Frontload over scaling: In Act 1, take cards that deal immediate damage. Act 1 elites (Gremlin Nob, Lagavulin) punish slow setup. Save scaling cards for Act 2+.
- Potions win Elite fights: Don't hoard potions. If a potion saves 15 HP in an Elite fight, it was worth more than saving it for the boss.
- Intent reading: Every enemy's next action is displayed. If they're buffing or defending, use that turn to set up powers rather than attacking.
- HP is a resource: Spending HP to kill an elite faster is often correct. Ending the fight 2 turns sooner saves more HP than blocking every hit.
The Map: Path Optimization
- Priority 1: Paths with 2+ Elite fights + campfires between them
- Priority 2: Paths with ? rooms (events are generally positive EV)
- Priority 3: Avoid paths with 3+ hallway fights in a row without campfires
- Act 1 specifically: Take 3 hallway fights before your first Elite. You need the card rewards to not die to Gremlin Nob.
📝 Key Difference from STS1: The Regent and Necrobinder completely change drafting priorities. Regent rewards flexible decks that can stance-switch frequently. Necrobinder wants you to draft and sacrifice minions constantly — card evaluation is very different from the original three characters.
