After getting my hands on Forza Horizon 6, I've seen a lot of players saying "the braking feels slippery" and "it's way too easy to lock up." After spending a couple of days with it, I've found that the driving experience has actually become much more detailed. This isn't a case of the handling getting worse—it's that the game now demands more precise driving. When it comes to braking in particular, the game no longer lets you just slam the pedal to the floor like in the previous title; it requires much finer control.

At first, I was understeering and spinning out constantly myself. It wasn't until later that I realized a key issue lay in the controller's trigger dead zone settings—specifically, the part of the menu where the translation for "Deceleration Axis Response Start Point" and "End Point" can be misleading.

The dead zone start point determines where the trigger begins registering input, and the dead zone end point determines the maximum braking pressure delivered when you pull the trigger all the way down.
After repeated testing, I can confirm that setting the "Deceleration Axis Dead Zone Inside" to 0 or 1 allows the brakes to build pressure with even the slightest trigger movement, which is extremely helpful for fine control. Meanwhile, lowering the "Deceleration Axis Dead Zone Outside" slightly (for example, from the default 100 down to 95 or even 90) actually allows you to reach high braking pressure more quickly. This makes the physical act of braking feel less strenuous—you don't have to yank the trigger all the way down. This goes against what many people might intuitively think, and it's because the in-game translation is misleading, reversing the relationship between trigger travel and pressure. The actual logic is: the larger the dead zone end point, the more trigger travel is required; by reducing it, you can output higher braking pressure with a shorter pull.

Looking at the more commonly recommended controller settings from overseas communities, this makes a great starting point:

  • Steering Dead Zone Inside: 0, Outside: 100, Linearity: 50–55

  • Acceleration Dead Zone Inside: 0, Outside: 100

  • Deceleration Dead Zone Inside: 0, Outside: 100

  • Clutch and E-Brake Dead Zones: leave at default

The idea behind this setup is to make throttle and brake inputs register as early as possible, while using the full range of the trigger, giving you the smoothest and most linear control. This is especially noticeable on wet surfaces or in high-powered RWD cars. If you're used to the previous game's feel, where pulling the trigger halfway could almost give you full braking, you can also set the Acceleration or Deceleration Outside Dead Zone to 99 or even slightly lower. That way, you can achieve full throttle or full braking without needing to pull the trigger completely to the stop—easier on the fingers and less fatiguing.

Ultimately, this generation places a much stronger emphasis on trail braking. When you're on the verge of locking up, the controller gives you vibration feedback. If you yank the steering at that moment, you'll easily understeer. The correct approach is to use the vibration as a guide: gradually release the brakes while progressively adding steering angle. Even keeping just 1% of brake pressure as you turn into a corner helps the car rotate and keeps the dynamics stable. As for the feeling of "not being able to stop in time," the simplest fix is to brake a little earlier and get used to the new braking efficiency.

If you want to practice more visually, you can turn on the telemetry data and use an overlay to display your brake and throttle curves, so you can see just how smooth your inputs are. Once you get the hang of it, you'll find that this nuanced feedback is actually quite addictive—it hasn't become harder, it's just begun to respect real driving logic more.
